What You Must Know About Consumer Credit Counselors
As Americans, we now see that there are millions of people struggling during these troubling economic times. The need for consumer credit counselors is greater now than it ever has been before. Credit counseling services specialize in helping people that are struggling with their mounting debts.
Credit counseling and debt consolidation are pretty much synonymous when you talk about these types of services. The credit counseling portion deals with helping consumers to better manage their finances in the future so they can avoid once again finding themselves in financial trouble and accruing debt.
In addition to consumer credit counselors offering financial advice, they also have pre-existing relationships with many of the creditors. They use these pre-existing relationships to lower your interest rates, eliminate fees and to consolidate your debts so that the consumer has only one monthly payment to make.
If you believe that these services may be something that would benefit you, you must first ask yourself the following questions:
- Am I in danger of falling behind on my payments?
- Has my debt becomes so great that I can no longer afford to pay it?
- Am I receiving phone calls from debt collection agencies?
- Have my monthly bills gotten to the point where I can no longer afford them?
A yes answer to one or more of these questions means that the services that are offered through consumer credit counselors can benefit you. In just about every one of these cases you are to the point where outside help is not only beneficial, but more than likely, now necessary.
There are many credit counseling services available and some are better than others. And some, I am sorry to say, are nothing more than scams that prey upon vulnerable people when they can least afford to be victimized (as if there ever was a good time). Before you begin to work with any one particular organization there are a series of issues that you must get in writing up-front. They include but are not limited to:
- Your rights as a consumer and what is it exactly that they plan to do for you.
- What fees they will charge (this means every single fee with nothing hidden).
- Your right to terminate the relationship whenever you choose without suffering financial loss.
- Get the details of exactly what your personalized debt repayment plan will entail.
Many consumer credit counselors will have a one-size-fits-all approach to helping their clients. That is not what you are looking for. Everyone’s situation is different and therefore different remedies are needed. If any one of these conditions are not met to your satisfactory then eliminate that credit counseling organization from consideration and move on to the next one.
